Community Group Funds Now Available

Applications now sought

We have around £2500 to share with local community groups which are volunteer-led and based within the Kirkbymoorside area.

Each year our volunteers save tonnes of fruit, mostly apples, from going to waste by juicing them and selling the pasteurised juice and cider that we make. Last year (2021) was not a good apple harvest but despite this we did make enough profits to share with our local community.

All local community groups are welcome to ask for a donation of up to £600 towards a specific purchase intended for the benefit of the members of their group.

Further details and application forms may be found here Community Group – Donation Request.

Christmas Market

We will be at the Kirkbymoorside Christmas Market on 26th November serving cups of warm spiced apple juice and mulled cider along with a selection of our bottled juice, cider and cider vinegar all at special market prices.

We will also have a limited number of bottles of spiced apple cup and mulled cider for sale for you to enjoy at home over the Christmas period. If you want to be certain of getting them before they run out then email us on kirkbyfruit@gmail.com to reserve yours for collection from the stall on Saturday.

New juicing season starting soon

Regular readers will know that we make juice from otherwise unwanted apples, for your own consumption or for sale in the town. For more details of how this service operates, please visit the ‘Surplus Fruit’ tab.

Our new juicing season will start on 1st September, and will run through to the end of October. We will post juicing dates on the website and slots must be booked in advance.

Apples are ripening early this year and beginning to fall, but the dry weather means that at the moment they contain very little juice. To get the best possible juice from your fruit, please leave it on the tree for as long as possible and check for ripeness before picking. Ripe apples will have very dark brown/black pips and taste juicy.

Please note the following points:

  • We only have enough capacity to accept a maximum of 120kg apples per household from within a 7 mile radius of Kirkbymoorside
  • apples must be clean and dry; blemishes are not a problem but we cannot accept any apples with signs of rot because they potentially contain a substance which can cause illness; and
  • for hygiene reasons, we are not able to accept fruit from fields where animals graze.

Details of how to book a slot will be posted along with the dates, very shortly.

A drink for summer sunshine

Sitting in the garden enjoying this glorious summer sunshine? The perfect drink to have at hand is our apple juice, made right here in Kirkbymoorside from otherwise unwanted apples.

Keep it chilled and it’s ready to go, or you can dilute it (50/50 is good) with lemonade for a sweeter taste, or with sparkling water for a bit of fizz.

Stocks are running down, so why not buy some while it’s still available? We are pleased to say that it is now stocked at the Moorside Store, along with our cider vinegar.

Donations announced

Back in November last year we invited bids for around £3000 which we had available to share with local community groups, volunteer-led and based within a seven mile radius of Kirkbymoorside. We are pleased to say that awards have now been made to the following groups:

  • Norton Beadlam Village Green
  • Kirkbymoorside Flying Club
  • Football Club
  • Kirkby in Bloom
  • Kirkbymoorside Primary School
  • Hutton le Hole Bowls Club
  • Kirkbymoorside History Group
  • Kirkbymoorside Town Band

We are delighted to have been able to support such a wide range of local activities.

Each year our volunteers save tonnes of fruit, mostly apples, from going to waste by juicing them and selling the pasteurised juice and cider that we make. Covid 19 did affect our productivity last year, but we did, however, manage enough socially distanced juicing sessions to run our buyback service, stock our four outlets in Kirkbymoorside, and make the profit which we are now sharing.

All local community groups are welcome to ask for a donation of up to £600 towards a specific purchase intended for the benefit of the members of their group.
