4lbs green tomatoes, chopped
1lb (peeled, cored, chopped) cooking apple
1lb (peeled, chopped) onions
1 pt malt vinegar
10oz sultanas
3 tsp salt
1 tsp allspice
2 tsp yellow mustard seed
2 tsp MILD chilli powder (optional)
8 oz white sugar
2 tblspns black treacle
Put tomatoes, apple and onion in a pan with the vinegar.
Cook gently until all vegetables are soft (about 30 mins). Mash with a potato masher to finish off the process.
Add all the remaining ingredients and continue cooking gently until the chutney is the right thickness (stir regularly at this stage or it will stick and burn). This chutney is best if slightly runny as it will thicken as it cools and could dry out.
Bottle hot to preserve.
